CHAPTER 11
¹Now it came to pass that after the sentence was given, and Ajora was led forth unto the place of execution, known unto the people as Golgorand, there was great sorrow throughout the land.
²For the hearts of the faithful were heavy as the sky darkened above, and the voices of the multitude cried out in grief and lamentation.
³Yet Ajora bore His burden with steadfast spirit, though the weight thereof was grievous upon His shoulders.
⁴And as He walked the path, many beheld Him and were moved to tears, crying, “Surely this is the Son of the Most High, who suffereth for the sins of the world.”
⁵But the rulers and priests mocked Him, saying, “If Thou be the Son of God, save Thyself.”
⁶And Ajora answered them not, for His purpose was greater than their scorn.
⁷And when they reached the place called the Skull, they bound Him between two thieves, that all might see and know the price of sin and the depth of mercy.
⁸And the Heavens grew dark from the sixth hour until the ninth, and a great silence fell upon Ivalice.
⁹And Ajora cried with a loud voice, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?”
¹⁰And many that stood by said, “Behold, He calleth His Father.”
¹¹And one ran, and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon a reed, and gave it to Him to drink, saying, “Let us see if His Father will come to take Him down.”
¹²But Ajora, with a voice strong and sure, said, “It is finished,” and bowed His head as the noose was tightened, and gave up the spirit.
¹³And immediately the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
¹⁴And Ivalice did quake, and the rocks were cleft.
¹⁵And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose. And the end of the kingdoms began.
¹⁶And they went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
¹⁷Now the Pharists, and they that were with him watching Ajora, when they saw the cataclysm and those things that were done, feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of the Most High.”
¹⁸And many women who followed Ajora from Betalon beheld these things afar off.
¹⁹Among whom was Mirah, a woman of great faith and devotion, who had healed from infirmities by His hand.
²⁰And she wept bitterly, for her hope seemed lost as the body of Ajora was taken down and laid in the sepulchre.
²¹But her tears were not in vain, for the promise of the Most High endureth forever.
²²And Damas, a man of honour and righteousness, went boldly to Pontius Mallius, and asked for the body of Ajora.
²³And Mallius was astonished at the courage of Damas, for none dared approach him.
²⁴And he granted him the body, that it might be given honourable burial.
²⁵And Damas took the body, and wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock.
²⁶And a great stone was rolled unto the door of the sepulchre.
²⁷And the chief priests and Pharists came unto Mallius, saying, “Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while He was yet alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’”
²⁸“Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night, and steal Him away, and say unto the people, ‘He is risen from the dead.’”
²⁹“So the last error shall be worse than the first.”
³⁰And Mallius said unto them, “Ye have a watch; go thy way, make it as sure as ye can.”
³¹So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting watch.
³²And all the city was filled with fear and expectation.
³³For none could fully grasp the meaning of the things that were come to pass.
³⁴But the faithful held fast to the words of Ajora, believing that life and light would overcome death and darkness.
³⁵And the days passed slowly, and the shadows lengthened.
³⁶Yet hope was not extinguished, for the promise of redemption was alive within their hearts.
