CHAPTER 5
¹In the twentieth year of His age, in the season when the barley ripeneth, the Lord’s Anointed, Ajora Glabados, arose from the house of His father in Betalon, and He went down unto the river Ardel, which windeth like a silver serpent through the low country.
²And He walked alone, save for the Spirit of the Most High, which went with Him and bare Him up in peace.
³And many who beheld Him in that time said, “Lo, there goeth the son of Ioseth, the Glabados, whom the star hath foretold, and in whom is no deceit.”
⁴And they marvelled at the calm of His countenance and the light which went before Him, for His face shone as one who hath beheld the glory of the Holy One.
⁵Then came He unto the hills of Narum, where the people were sore afflicted by unjust lords, and Ivalice itself groaned under the weight of their corruption.
⁶There in the square of the city He sat, beneath the shade of the terebinth tree, and the people gathered unto Him, for word had gone abroad of the babe who rose upon His birth and spake with the wisdom of prophets.
⁷And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are they which do hunger after righteousness, for their bellies shall be filled with the fruit of Heaven.”
⁸“And woe unto the proud and the mighty, who grind the faces of the poor, for the frost of judgment shall fall upon them in the day of reckoning.”
⁹The people wept, and said one unto another, “Never hath man spoken thus unto us, neither the scribes nor the priests of the old temple.”
¹⁰And Ajora walked among the people, and laid His hands upon the broken and the bowed, and their hearts were healed, though their bodies remained unwhole.
¹¹Then came unto Him Velius, a scribe of renown, who had dwelt in the house of scholars in Sudalia, saying: “Master, what must a man do to enter into the Paradise that thou speakest of?”
¹²And Ajora saith unto him: “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and love thy neighbour as thyself. In these two hang all the law and the hope of Heaven.”
¹³Velius bowed his head and followed Him from that day forward, and he became the first of His disciples.
¹⁴After this, Ajora travelled through the cities and hamlets of the southern kingdom, proclaiming that the Kingdom of God was at hand, and that men must turn from their sins and seek the mercy of the Most High.
¹⁵And wherever He went, the multitude pressed about Him, to hear His words and to be near the Presence of the Living God.
¹⁶Then came unto Him a man named Duma, a smith from the town of Gallad, who had grown weary of his trade and the hardness of the world.
¹⁷Ajora looked upon him and said, “Follow Me, and I shall make thee a refiner not of iron, but of men’s souls.”
¹⁸And Duma left his forge and his hammer, and walked with the Lord.
¹⁹In the town of Brath, Ajora passed by the booth of customs, where sat a collector named Zebeb, who was despised of all for his extortions.
²⁰And Ajora said unto him, “Zebeb, come forth, and make thy peace with Heaven.”
²¹Zebeb rose straightway, and returned the money he had gained by unjust measures, and he, too, became a disciple.
²²Now there was in the land a man named Zalera, a wise one and full of counsel, who knew the scrolls and the old sayings of the prophets.
²³He came to Ajora by night, and said, “Art thou He that is sent, or do we look for another?”
²⁴And He answered, “That which thou hast long read in darkness, behold now in the light: the blind see, the meek are raised, the Word goeth forth again.”
²⁵Then Zalera fell upon his face and worshipped Him, and from thenceforth did he walk in His company.
²⁶Thus were gathered unto Him the first of the Twelve: Velius, Duma, Zalera, and Zebeb.
²⁷In the days that followed, others also did come, moved of the Spirit: Hashmal, a keeper of vineyards; Ultima, a weaver of song and wisdom; Sel, a traveller from beyond the mountains; Queklain, once a priest of the old rites, now converted to the new Way.
²⁸And Rophochehe, Adrammelech, Cheraub, and Leviathan, each called by name, each chosen of God, became likewise His disciples.
²⁹These twelve did Ajora call unto Him atop the hill of Zepheth, and He spake unto them, saying:
³⁰“Ye are the stones of My foundation, and upon thee shall I build Mine House. Whither I go, there shall ye go also; and what I speak unto the multitudes, ye shall carry forth unto the ends of the world.”
³¹“Let not thy hearts be troubled when ye are reviled and cast out, for the Kingdom I declare is not of this world, and My Father’s reward is not silver nor gold, but joy incorruptible.”
³²And they worshipped Him, and kissed His hands, and He blessed them.
³³Thereafter went they as one company, from town to town and from gate to gate, bearing with them the glad tidings of Heaven, and the promise of the Paradise to come.
³⁴And many who heard believed, and left their burdens behind to walk in the dust of His feet.
³⁵Thus began the ministry of the Glabados, the Holy One, Son of the Living God, who was sent to redeem the world from its sorrow and to prepare the way for the great and terrible Day of the Lord.
