CHAPTER 8
¹And it came to pass, when the days drew nigh that the Pass of Fandel awaited His feet, that Ajora set His face steadfastly to go unto Murond, the city set upon the mountain of holiness.
²Now the city of Murond was mighty among the nations, filled with scribes and keepers of the old scrolls, a place of law and sacrifice, and all the tribes of Ivalice came unto it at the appointed seasons.
³And as Ajora drew near to the hills that encompassed the city, He called unto Him two of His disciples, even Sel and Cheraub, and said unto them:
⁴“Go ye into the hamlet that lieth before thee, and straightway ye shall find a young horse tied, whereon never man hath sat: loose him, and bring him unto Me.”
⁵“And if any man asketh thee, say unto him, ‘The Master hath need of him’; and he shall straightway send him.”
⁶And the disciples went their way, and found the young horse, even as the Lord had said, and brought him unto Ajora as commanded.
⁷And they cast their garments upon the beast, and set the Lord thereon.
⁸And as He rode forth, many spread their garments in the way; others cut branches of palm and olive, and strewed them before His path, crying aloud in joy and reverence.
⁹The multitude that went before, and they that followed, lifted up their voices, saying, “Hosanna to the Glabados! Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Most High!”
¹⁰“Hosanna in the highest realms, and glory to the One who bringeth peace!”
¹¹And the people of the road, even from the hills and the valleys, came forth to behold Him, for the fame of His works had preceded Him: the healing of the sick, the casting out of devils, the feeding of thousands with but a morsel, and the raising of hope among the poor.
¹²Now Murond was a city of great stone and white spires, and its gates of bronze were opened wide before Him.
¹³And as Ajora entered into the gates, there arose a stirring in the city, and many asked, “Who is this that rideth as a prince, yet hath no sword nor crown?”
¹⁴And the multitude answered them, “This is Ajora, the Glabados, the Holy One of Ivalice, sent of the Most High, who hath power and mercy alike!”
¹⁵Then the priests of the Temple of the Veil came forth in their robes, and beheld the multitude giving praise unto Him. And they were sore displeased.
¹⁶For they perceived that the hearts of the people turned from them unto Him, and feared that their power should be made as dust and scattered upon the wind.
¹⁷And certain among them came unto Him and said, “Master, rebuke Thy followers, for they cry out too greatly, and their words are full of presumption.”
¹⁸But Ajora answered and said unto them, “Verily I say unto thee, if these should hold their peace, the stones themselves would cry out.”
¹⁹And He passed through the midst of the city, and all the people blessed Him.
²⁰Children came running and laid garlands of spring flowers at His feet, crying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Glabados, who cometh with healing in His wings!”
²¹And women wept for joy, and old men lifted up their hands and said, “In our age we have seen salvation!”
²²Now there stood in the midst of Murond a great square, wherein was the Temple of Offering, a place consecrated unto the ancient rites of Ivalice.
²³And Ajora entered therein, and beheld many who sold beasts for sacrifice and changed coin, taking of the people more than was just.
²⁴And He made a scourge of braided cords, and cast them out of the temple court, saying, “It is written: My house shall be called an house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of robbers.”
²⁵And the sellers and coin-changers fled before His wrath, and the people were astonished at His zeal.
²⁶Then came unto Him the poor, and He blessed them; and the lame, and He healed them; and the blind, and He gave them sight.
²⁷And all that day did He teach in the court, speaking in parables and in plain speech, that even the smallest might understand.
²⁸And He said, “The Kingdom of the Most High is not come with banners, nor is it bought with gold. Lo, it is within thee. Whoso hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
²⁹And many believed on Him that day, and followed Him henceforth, counting the cost but fearing not.
³⁰But the keepers of tradition and law, whose hearts were hard, took counsel one with another, saying, “If we let Him alone, all men will believe on Him, and our place shall be lost.”
³¹Therefore did they devise to seize Him by night and try Him in secret, for they feared the multitude, who hung upon His words.
³²Yet Ajora knew their thoughts, for nothing was hidden from the Anointed, and He departed that night from the Temple, and lodged with His disciples in the house of a potter on the edge of the city.
³³And as He looked upon Murond from the hill, He wept and said, “O city of stone, that knowest not the hour of thy visitation! Would that thou hadst known the way of peace.”
³⁴“Behold, I come not to destroy, but to fulfill; not with the sword, but with the Word; not to condemn the world, but to save the world from chaos.”
³⁵And He lifted up His hands and blessed the city, though He knew what should befall Him.
³⁶And His disciples were sore troubled, perceiving that His words were heavy, yet they spake not, but remained with Him in silence.
³⁷And thus was fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Vellonde; shout, O daughter of Murond: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: lowly, and riding upon a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”
³⁸And the light of the sun faded from the sky, and the stars appeared in the firmament, bearing witness to the day when the Glabados entered His city.
³⁹And all the people lay down to rest, but in the heart of the holy city, the battle between truth and falsehood had begun to stir.
