CHAPTER 4
¹And it came to pass, in the third year of His going forth, that Ajora gathered the multitude upon the mount of Halcya, a wide hill surrounded by trees and the murmuring of rivers, that they might receive the fullness of His teaching.
²And there were with Him the twelve apostles and many disciples besides, and among the multitude were rich men and poor, soldiers and shepherds, men of letters and men unlearned, women and children, and the outcast and the clean.
³And Ajora stood upon a great stone, and when the people had quieted themselves before Him, He lifted up His voice and began to teach, saying:
⁴“Hearken unto Me, ye peoples of Ivalice, for I bring unto thee the law that is from the beginning, which is holy and eternal, and hath not been diminished nor changed, though many have cast it aside and walked after their own imaginations.”
⁵“For the Lord thy God is one, and there is no other beside Him. His name is ineffable, and His ways are just. He made the stars and the depths, the winds and the flame. He setteth kings upon their thrones, and bringeth princes to nothing. He hath breathed into thee the breath of life, and hath fashioned thy soul to long after Him.”
⁶“Now therefore I declare unto thee the commandments which proceed from His throne, that thou mayest walk in the light and not stumble in the darkness, and that thy portion may not be with the frozen in the kingdom of Amphisbaena, where is gnashing of teeth and silence everlasting.”
⁷And the multitude trembled at His words, and they pressed in to hear.
⁸Then Ajora stretched forth His hand and said, “These are the seven great commandments which the Lord thy God hath given unto thee:”
⁹“Thou shalt have no other god before Me, neither shalt thou fashion unto thyself idols of stone, or wood, or any likeness that is in Ivalice or the Heavens. For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and My glory shall I not give to another.”
¹⁰“Woe unto them that bow before false thrones and trust in the works of their own hands. For their path leadeth unto destruction, and they shall call unto their gods, and none shall answer.”
¹¹“Thou shalt do no murder, neither shalt thou raise up thy hand in wrath to spill innocent blood. For every life is Mine, saith the Lord, and I avenge the shedding thereof.”
¹²“Ye have heard it said among the ancients, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth’; but I say unto thee, he that taketh up the blade shall perish by the blade. Be ye not swift to wrath, but walk humbly and forgive thy brother his trespass.”
¹³“Thou shalt not take the chattel of another, neither by stealth, nor by craft, nor by deceit of tongue. For the Lord beholdeth, and shall not forget the oppression of the poor.”
¹⁴“Be content with such things as ye have. For what profiteth it a man if he gaineth another’s flock but loseth his soul in the judgment?”
¹⁵“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, neither shalt thou utter it without reverence, nor make it common among jesters and scorners. For the name of the Lord is holy, and terrible in majesty.”
¹⁶“Let thy tongue be bridled, and thy lips guarded, that they speak not rashly of things divine. For the angels tremble before the name, and cover their faces with their wings.”
¹⁷“Thou shalt not carry out retribution in wrath, but shalt leave vengeance unto the Lord, who knoweth the heart and trieth the reins. Return not evil for evil, but overcome evil with good.”
¹⁸“Be not as the beasts that tear at one another, nor the dogs that return again to their vomit. For wrath is as fire in the bones, and envy as rottenness in the marrow. He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty.”
¹⁹“Thou shalt not envy thy neighbor, nor covet his wife, nor his ass, nor his servant, nor his portion. For envy burneth as a hidden flame and consumeth the soul.”
²⁰“Let thine eye be single and thy heart steadfast. Give thanks for what is thine, and bless them that prosper, for the Lord giveth unto whom He will.”
²¹“Thou shalt not be corrupt with the power entrusted to thee, whether thou art prince or priest, elder or overseer. For unto whom much is given, of him shall much be required.”
²²“Woe unto the judges who pervert justice for bribes, and unto the watchmen who sleep while the city falleth. The Lord seeth and shall reward each man according to his deeds.”
²³And when Ajora had spoken these words, the people were astonished at His doctrine, for never man spake as He did. His speech was full of light, and pierced as a two-edged sword, and none could gainsay Him.
²⁴Then spake one from among the multitude, saying, “Lord, what shall become of the man who breaketh these commandments, and hideth his sin?”
²⁵And Ajora answered and said, “Verily I say unto thee, he shall be as the dead in the depths, and his soul shall go down before Amphisbaena, who rules the frozen kingdom, where the wicked dwell in ice without end. For their hearts were hard and their ears stopped, and they loved darkness rather than light.”
²⁶“But whosoever shall hear these commandments, and do them, shall be likened unto a man that builded his house upon a rock. The storm beat upon it, and the winds howled, yet it fell not, for it was founded upon the word of the Lord.”
²⁷“Ye are not children of wrath, but sons and daughters of the Most High. Keep, therefore, His commandments, and walk uprightly all thy days, and ye shall enter into Paradise, where the trees bear fruit in all seasons, and the waters of life flow from the throne of God.”
²⁸And the multitudes wept and rejoiced, and many repented of their sins that day. And they said, “Truly, this is the Glabados, the Son of God. His word is like fire in our bones, and light in the darkness.”
²⁹And from that time forward, the seven commandments were kept upon tablets and written in scrolls, and taught in every village and town, and the disciples made it known among the people.
³⁰And Ajora departed thence with His apostles, to go into the coasts of Thramas, that He might heal the sick and strengthen the weak, and declare the mercy of God unto the nations.
