CHAPTER 4
¹And it came to pass, that Ajora, having gathered the multitude upon a high place, lifted up His voice and spake unto them, saying, “Hearken, O ye children of men, to the words of the Lord thy God, who hath sent Me to teach thee the way of life and salvation.”
²“For the Lord hath established His law, a covenant eternal, to guide the steps of the righteous, and to bring down the proud and the wicked.”
³“I declare unto thee the seven great commandments of the Most High, which ye shall observe with all thy heart, and mind, and soul, that ye may dwell in His presence forever.”
⁴“Thou shalt have no other God but Me; for I am the Lord thy God, and there is none beside Me. Turn not thy heart unto idols, nor set up graven images; for I am jealous, and will visit the sins of the Fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me.”
⁵“Thou shalt do no murder, neither in thy heart nor by thy hand; for all life is sacred, fashioned by the Lord’s own breath. He that taketh the life of his brother unjustly shall be cut off from among the people.”
⁶“Thou shalt not take the chattel of another; neither shalt thou steal that which is not thine. For the Lord loveth justice and mercy, and He will bring to judgment the oppressor and the thief.”
⁷“Thou shalt not utter the Lord’s name vainly, and shalt keep it holy in all thy speech and deed. For the name of the Lord is a refuge and a shield, and they that profane it shall be found guilty before Him.”
⁸“Thou shalt not carry out retribution in wrath; for vengeance belongeth unto the Lord, and he that taketh it upon himself shall suffer judgment. Forgive, therefore, as the Lord hath forgiven thee.”
⁹“Thou shalt not envy another, neither for his goods nor for his standing; but rejoice in the blessings of the Lord upon thy neighbor, and be content with thy portion.”
¹⁰“Thou shalt not be corrupt with the power entrusted to thee; for the Lord calleth the rulers and judges to be servants of justice, not lords over the people. Use not thy office to oppress, nor to enrich thyself unjustly.”
¹¹“These are the seven great commandments of God, which bind every man and woman who would enter into the Kingdom of Paradise. He that keepeth them shall find favor in the eyes of the Lord, and his days shall be long upon Ivalice.”
¹²“But he that despiseth these laws and turneth aside from the path shall know the punishment of the Lord, which is grievous and terrible.”
¹³“For the Lord hath said, ‘The disobedient shall be cast into the outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth; where the worm dieth not, and the light is not seen.’”
¹⁴“There shall be no escape from this torment, for the Lord is just and true, and His judgment shall be revealed upon all flesh.”
¹⁵“Therefore, hear ye and understand, O children of men: keep ye My commandments, and walk in the way of holiness; for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.”
¹⁶“I say unto thee, the Son of God came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it; and in Him is the fullness of righteousness.”
¹⁷“Follow Me, and I will teach thee the law of love, for love is the fulfilling of the law, and he that loveth his neighbor hath kept the commandments of God.”
¹⁸“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit Ivalice; blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy; blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see the Lord.”
¹⁹“Take heed that no man deceive thee with vain words, saying, ‘Lo, the Kingdom is here’ or ‘There it is,’ for the Kingdom of God is within thee, and its gate is the keeping of His commandments.”
²⁰“Many shall come in My name, claiming to bring new laws and ways; but hold fast to the commandments which have been given from the beginning, for they are the foundation of all righteousness.”
²¹“I charge thee, therefore, to teach these commandments to thy children, to write them upon thy hearts, and to observe them in all thy ways.”
²²“Let no man be found trampling upon the law of the Lord, for as the Heavens are high above Ivalice, so is His mercy great toward them that obey Him, and His wrath kindled against them that rebel.”
²³“Remember always the words of the prophets, and the judgments of the righteous; for the Lord is a consuming fire to the wicked, but a shield to the faithful.”
²⁴“He that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth, but he that walketh in the light of the commandments shall not stumble.”
²⁵“Be ye therefore perfect, even as thy Father in Heaven is perfect; and show forth His glory by a life of obedience and faith.”
²⁶“And when ye stand before the throne of the Lord, ye shall be judged according to these commandments; and the righteous shall enter into eternal joy, but the wicked shall be cast into everlasting torment.”
²⁷“Thus saith the Lord: Let every tongue confess, and every knee bow, to the law of the Most High, for it is holy and just, and the keeping thereof is the path to life everlasting.”
²⁸And the people heard these words, and were sore afraid; for the commandments were stern, and the punishments dreadful.
²⁹Yet some were glad, and said among themselves, “Truly, this is the word of the Lord our God, and we will keep His commandments, that we may live and not perish.”
³⁰And Ajora blessed them, saying, “Go forth in peace, and keep the commandments of the Lord; for His mercy endureth forever, and His law is a lamp unto thy feet.”
³¹“Let no man add to these words, nor take away from them; for whosoever doth so shall be cast into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
³²“But unto thou that keep these commandments shall be given the crown of life, and ye shall reign with Me in the Kingdom of Paradise.”
³³Thus ended the teaching of Ajora upon the commandments of God, which were to be the foundation of His Church and the guide of His people unto the end of the world.
³⁴Praise be to the Lord God Almighty, who hath given His law as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path; may His name be glorified forevermore.
³⁵Amen.
