CHAPTER 1
¹And it came to pass in the latter years of the disciples, when the hearts of men waxed cold and the light of understanding was dimmed, that Leviathan, the disciple whom the Lord Ajora loved, did dwell alone upon the isle called Saphir.
²The isle lay far in the eastern sea, girded with cliffs and forests, and none came thither but birds of the air and the wind upon the waves.
³And Leviathan was well stricken in years; his hair was white as lamb’s wool, and his eyes deep as still waters, for he had seen the Lord in the days of His flesh and beheld His glory after His rising again.
⁴Daily did he rise with the sun and offer praises; nightly he spake aloud the psalms of his heart, for the Lord was his meditation and the fire within his bones.
⁵Now in the fiftieth year after the Ascension, on the seventh day of the third month, a great stillness fell upon the isle, such as had not been known among the living.
⁶The wind was hushed, and the waves ceased from their motion; the birds took flight and gave no cry, and the stars shone at noonday.
⁷And Leviathan, perceiving that a wonder was near, put off his sandals and fell upon his face upon the rock where he prayed.
⁸Then a light burst forth above him, sevenfold brighter than the sun, and the whole sky was filled with fire like unto jasper and carbuncle, and the air was rent as by a multitude of voices.
⁹And a voice cried from the midst of the glory, saying, “Leviathan, My friend, rise and behold, for I come unto thee in power and majesty.”
¹⁰And Leviathan, trembling, lifted up his eyes, and lo, Ajora stood before him, radiant as the dawn, and in His hand was a rod of sapphire, and upon His brow a crown of stars.
¹¹His face was as the lightning, and His robe flowed as living flame, and His voice shook the stones of the shore.
¹²And Ajora said, “Peace be unto thee, for thou art not forgotten; behold, I have kept thee for this hour, and now shalt thou write the words of the End, and of that which shall follow after.”
¹³“Write thou in a scroll all that I shall reveal unto thee, and seal it not, for the time is near, yea, even at the doors.”
¹⁴Then Leviathan arose and took a scroll of papyrus, and his hand was made strong, and his memory enlarged, and his soul kindled with fire from on high.
¹⁵And Ajora lifted His hand toward the Heavens, and said, “Behold, I show thee the Emanation of the End and the Coming of Paradise.”
¹⁶“For the years of the world shall be fulfilled, and the measure of iniquity shall be complete, and the cry of the righteous shall reach unto Me.”
¹⁷“Therefore shall the mysteries be unveiled, of the judgments to be set in motion, and the veil upon the nations which shall be rent.”
¹⁸“The time of silence is coming; soon shall the Heavens speak, and Ivalice shall tremble at the voice of her Maker.”
¹⁹“The Father shall send forth His servant, Justice, the first among the Nine Judges Magister, and he shall go as a herald, bearing His word like a sword, and none shall hinder him.”
²⁰“He shall declare that the day of the Lord is nigh, and that the reckoning is begun; let all flesh take heed.”
²¹And as Ajora spake, the sky above was rolled back as a scroll, and Leviathan beheld the high place where the Eternal sat enthroned.
²²There was a sea of glass like unto crystal, and four seraphim with wings of gold, and above them, nine thrones of iron, where sat the Nine Judges Magister.
²³These were clothed in brightness, and fire went forth from them, and in their midst stood Justice, mighty and terrible, whose eyes were as a flame of fire and whose garments bore the color of blood mingled with light.
²⁴And the Lord spake unto Justice, saying, “Go thou forth unto Ivalice, and cry aloud: Prepare thy hearts, O children of men, for thy time is accomplished.”
²⁵“Say unto the kings and the slaves, the wise and the unlearned, the seller and the buyer, the bride and the widow: The Lord cometh to weigh thee in the balance.”
²⁶And Justice bowed himself, and took the rod of proclamation, forged before time in the fire of the Lord’s wrath, and his voice went out like thunder over the deep.
²⁷And Leviathan saw that Justice descended swiftly as lightning upon Ivalice, passing over the great sea and the cities of men.
²⁸And wherever he came, the air grew still and a hush fell, and the hearts of men were seized with dread.
²⁹Then did Justice cry aloud in the tongue of every nation, saying, “Behold, the day of recompense is at hand; repent, for the door shall soon be shut.”
³⁰“The Lord is not mocked, neither shall His patience tarry forever; return unto Him with fasting and lamentation, and seek the path of light while yet it may be found.”
³¹And many, hearing, were cut to the heart, and fell upon their knees in the street, and cried, “Lord, have mercy!”
³²But others laughed, and said, “This is the madness of prophets; we shall eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
³³And Justice passed them by, and his eyes wept fire, for he knew what was appointed.
³⁴Then did Leviathan see the Heavens close again, and Ajora turned to him and said, “This is but the beginning; thou shalt see greater things than these.”
³⁵“For now shall I unveil unto thee the seven trials, and the signs that shall go before My appearing.”
³⁶“The mountains shall be moved, and the seas shall roar; the stars shall fall from Heaven, and the hearts of men shall fail them.”
³⁷“Yet in all these things, My chosen shall not be forsaken, for My hand shall be upon them, and My name in their hearts.”
³⁸And Leviathan said, “Lord, who shall be able to stand in that day, when the Heavens are shaken and Ivalice giveth way?”
³⁹And Ajora answered, “He that is pure, he that hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.”
⁴⁰“He that loveth righteousness, and hateth oppression; he that feedeth the hungry, and comforteth the weak.”
⁴¹“Unto such shall the gates of Paradise be opened, and they shall walk with Me in white.”
⁴²Then Ajora stretched forth His hand, and touched the eyes of Leviathan, and lo, he beheld visions and parables in the air.
⁴³He saw a scroll sealed with seven seals, and hands that sought to open it but could not.
⁴⁴He saw a golden lampstand, and a city descending from the sky, bright as the morning.
⁴⁵He saw a serpent of brass coiled around a tree, and a sword in the mouth of a lamb.
⁴⁶And Ajora said, “All these shall I make known unto thee, and thou shalt write them faithfully, for the time is short.”
⁴⁷“Cry aloud, and spare not; write it upon the scroll, that he who runneth may read it.”
⁴⁸Then Leviathan fell upon his face, and worshipped the Lord, saying, “Blessed art Thou, O Holy One, for Thou hast not left us in darkness.”
⁴⁹And the Lord tarried with him the space of many hours, and taught him the words of the scroll, that should be written upon it.
⁵⁰And when the sun was gone down, Ajora was taken up in glory, and the isle was filled with silence.
⁵¹And Leviathan wept, but not with sorrow, for his soul burned with joy and awe.
⁵²Then did he rise and set himself to the task appointed, and by the light of a lamp did he begin the scroll.
⁵³And he wrote of the vision of Ajora, and the sending of Justice, and the call to repentance, line by line, as it had been shown unto him.
⁵⁴And the words were as fire in his bones, and the ink flowed as from a river.
⁵⁵He ate no bread, nor drank any water, for the space of three days, till the first part was written.
⁵⁶And he prayed, saying, “Lord, let my hand not err, nor my heart faint, till the fullness of Thy word be written.”
⁵⁷Then came the wind again upon the isle, and the birds returned, and the sea broke once more upon the rocks.
⁵⁸But Leviathan was changed; for the glory of the Lord had passed before him, and his face shone as the face of a messenger.
⁵⁹And he knew from that day forth, he would be no more counted among men, but among prophets and witnesses.
⁶⁰For he spake not of his own will, but as he was moved by the Spirit of the Lord.
⁶¹And then the Heavens opened, and Justice stood once more before the Lord, and the Lord gave him new charge.
⁶²For the End will begin, and the wheels of time turn toward the Paradise that is to be.
⁶³And the angels kept silence, waiting the trumpet.
⁶⁴And Leviathan dreamed of the river that flowed from the throne, and the tree of life whose leaves heal the nations.
⁶⁵And he heard the voice of Ajora once more, saying, “I am Alpha and Omega, He that was, and is, and is to come.”
⁶⁶“Write, therefore, and be not afraid; for these words are faithful and true.”
