CHAPTER 2
¹And after the Lord had opened the vision and given Elior the fire of revelation, He lingered in the stillness of the place.
²The stars faded above and the light of morning touched the pines, but the glory of the Lord did not fade with the night.
³Elior bowed low to Ivalice and covered his face with his hands, for his soul quaked with awe and his heart knew no speech.
⁴Then the Lord said unto him, “Rise now, O My servant, for thy charge awaits, and the road I set before thee shall not be easy.”
⁵And Elior rose, though his legs were unsteady, and he lifted his eyes to the Voice that burned within him.
⁶“Go now,” said the Lord, “into the kingdoms of Ivalice — to Delmar, to Avar, and to Kezreth, and walk among the people of My breath.”
⁷“Speak to them boldly, for they are My children. Tell them the time has come and the hour is near, when My Son shall be among them.”
⁸“Tell them He shall teach not as the scribes teach, nor speak as the judges speak, but with the voice of the Everlasting.”
⁹“Tell them that He shall proclaim Paradise — not a dream beyond death, but a promise that begins in the heart of the faithful, even now.”
¹⁰“For in those days, many shall say, ‘Where is God?’ and ‘What has become of His power?’ But thou shalt answer: ‘The Lord has not forsaken thee — He is preparing the Way.’”
¹¹“Thou shalt be as one crying out in the valleys and on the streets, in market and field, ‘Make ready the path of the Lord!’”
¹²“Let no face frighten thee, and let no pride silence thee. Speak as I command, and do not bend to favor nor flattery, nor fear the wrath of men.”
¹³“For I tell thee the truth: many will hate thee for My name’s sake. They will call thee liar, madman, traitor, and fool. They will mock the Word and twist it to suit their hunger.”
¹⁴“But thou, Elior, thou must not falter. Keep the faith that I have placed within thee. Let it burn brighter than the sun at its height.”
¹⁵“If they cast thee out, bless them. If they strike thee, pray for them. If they drag thee before kings and courts, speak plainly, and fear not what to say — for My Spirit shall speak through thee.”
¹⁶“And though thy path be paved with scorn and thy nights with sorrow, know that I am near to those who suffer for righteousness.”
¹⁷“Do not look to the numbers of those who follow, nor to the applause of crowds, but look always to Me, and thou shalt not be moved.”
¹⁸And Elior said, “Lord, the task is great, and I am but one man. My words are plain, and I am no orator of the courts.”
¹⁹But the Lord answered, “It is not the craft of thy speech that will turn hearts, but the truth it carries. Even a child’s cry may stir an army if My Spirit moves in it.”
²⁰“I have placed My Word in thy bones like fire, and it shall not stay hidden. Thou wilt speak, Elior, whether thou will or no.”
²¹“And when thy voice is lifted up, those who hear shall remember it in the days to come, and they will see its truth in My Son when He appears.”
²²Then the Lord reached forth and placed His hand upon Elior’s head, and the man trembled, for power surged through him like lightning hidden in clay.
²³“Now go,” said the Lord, “and speak to the shepherd and the prince, the merchant and the beggar. Let none say they were not warned.”
²⁴“Tell them the Kingdom draws near — a Kingdom not of stone nor gold, but of spirit and peace, whose gates shall be opened by My Son.”
²⁵“Thou shalt see little of what is to come, for thy time is brief, and thy journey short. But what thou begin shall echo through generations.”
²⁶“And when the end of thy path draws near, and when men come with rope and rod, thou must not curse them, nor despair. For even then I shall be with thee.”
²⁷“Though the world takes thy breath, it cannot take thy spirit. Thou shalt dwell with Me in the Paradise of which thou speak.”
²⁸“Thy death will not be the end, but the seed of new life, and from thy blood shall truth spring up like wheat in a thirsty land.”
²⁹And Elior wept again, not for fear, but for the greatness of the calling, and for the burden of it.
³⁰Then the Lord was taken from his sight, and the wind stirred once more, and the trees resumed their song, and the lamp in the scribe’s house burned low.
³¹Elior girded himself and packed his scrolls, and he set his feet toward the kingdoms of men, with nothing in his hands but the Word of the Living God.
