CHAPTER 1
¹In the time when the kingdoms were full of striving and the days passed without heed to the Heavens, the Lord looked upon Ivalice and saw the need of the people.
²Though the fields bore fruit and the cities were adorned with wealth, there was a famine of the spirit. The hearts of many had grown weary of righteousness, and falsehood spread among the high and the low alike.
³And God, who does not forget His promises, nor abandon the work of His hands, determined in His mercy to prepare the world for the coming of His Son.
⁴Now in the land of Kezreth, among the vineyards and olive trees, there lived a man named Elior, a keeper of scrolls and a man of quiet ways, whose heart was faithful though his tongue seldom spoke.
⁵On the seventh day of the month of flowering, as the evening winds stirred the leaves of the fig tree near his home, a great brightness fell upon the hill where Elior knelt in prayer.
⁶The air thickened with a stillness beyond silence, and the ground trembled as with reverence. And behold, a voice like many waters spoke from the midst of the light.
⁷And the voice said, “Elior, son of Meriden, rise and hear. For I, the Lord thy God, have chosen thee from among the children of men to carry My word to the people.”
⁸Elior fell upon his face and trembled, for the power of the presence of the Lord was like fire wrapped in wind, and his soul was undone within him.
⁹And the Lord said, “Be not afraid, for I am with thee. I have known thee before thy first breath, and I have marked thy days. Thou shalt be My Prophet to the kingdoms, and through thy voice shall the people be made ready.”
¹⁰Then the light swelled and encompassed the sky, and the trees bowed low, and the birds ceased their song, and all things around bore witness to the moment.
¹¹The Lord spoke again, saying, “The hour draws near. My Son shall come into the world, not in wrath, but in mercy; not with sword, but with truth upon His lips and healing in His hands.”
¹²“He shall walk among the people and be as one of them. He shall speak of the Kingdom of Heaven and the Paradise to come. He shall lift the lowly and rebuke the proud.”
¹³“The hearts of the broken shall He mend, and the eyes of the blind shall He open. He shall teach not as the scribes, but with the voice of One who knows the foundation of the world.”
¹⁴“And many shall hear and be changed. But many also shall scoff, and turn away, and plot against Him, for the world resists what it cannot command.”
¹⁵Then Elior raised his eyes, though they were heavy with tears, and said, “Lord, how shall I, who am but a keeper of parchment and ink, proclaim so great a message?”
¹⁶And God said, “I have chosen the weak to shame the mighty, and the simple to confound the wise. I have placed My word in thy mouth, and it shall burn with truth.”
¹⁷“Say to the people: Prepare thy hearts, for the Son of the Most High draws near. He shall come not in splendor, but in humility. Yet His light shall be as the dawn, and His word shall never return void.”
¹⁸“Say also: Paradise is not a tale of old, but a promise yet to be fulfilled. The righteous shall enter, and the weary shall find rest. The mourners shall be comforted, and every tear shall be wiped away.”
¹⁹“Let the kings heed, and the peasants rejoice. Let the merchants pause, and the shepherds sing. Let all Ivalice make ready for the Coming One.”
²⁰And Elior bowed himself to the ground, saying, “Let it be unto me according to Thy will, O Lord. I am but dust, but I am Thine.”
²¹Then the light withdrew as swiftly as it had come, and the evening returned, though not as it had been before. For the air held a hush of holiness, and Elior's heart was set afire with purpose.
²²And he gathered his scrolls, and clothed himself in garments of travel, and awaited the command of the Lord, ready to walk where few had walked and to speak what few would hear.
²³Thus began the ministry of the First Prophet, by whose voice the world was told: The Son is coming, and with Him, the Kingdom of Heaven.
