CHAPTER 3
¹And Elior descended from the mountain where the Lord had spoken, and his heart burned within him like a fire kindled in dry wood.
²The air of the lower valleys was thick with the smoke of hearths and the cries of merchants, and the world below seemed blind to the glory above.
³Yet Elior feared not, for the Spirit of the Lord was strong upon him, and he walked as one sent.
⁴He came first to the Kingdom of Delmar, where the forests grew close about the villages, and the people were known for their craftsmen and their quiet labor.
⁵There he stood in the square, beneath the bronze bell of the clocktower, and he called out, saying:
⁶“Hear, O people of Delmar! The time of waiting draws to its end! The Lord, who formed the Heavens, prepares to send His Son among thee!”
⁷“He shall walk where thou walk, and speak the words of Paradise. He shall open the ears of the deaf and unbind the hearts of the bitter.”
⁸“Turn thy gaze from thy coin and thy craft. Cleanse thy hands and prepare thy souls. For the Day of Gladness comes as a thief in the night.”
⁹And many gathered to hear, and some were stirred in spirit, and asked questions with honest hearts. But others laughed and said, “What fool is this who speaks of gods walking like men?”
¹⁰And a certain man said, “The gods speak in thunder and fire, not in the dust of the road. Be gone, mad prophet.”
¹¹Yet Elior remained and preached in the fields and by the rivers. He spoke with farmers and beggars, with widows and herdsmen.
¹²Some believed, and a few followed him when he departed Delmar to journey eastward into Avar.
¹³Avar, land of scholars and judges, was a kingdom of towers and temples, where scrolls outnumbered swords and words were bartered like spices.
¹⁴There Elior stood at the foot of the Temple of the Sages and lifted his voice like a trumpet, crying:
¹⁵“O Avar! Thou who pride thyself on wisdom — hear the true Word of the Lord! The Son of God comes, not to debate, but to declare!”
¹⁶“He shall confound the learned and uplift the lowly. He shall teach what cannot be written, and write what cannot be erased — upon thy hearts!”
¹⁷The scribes scoffed and said, “What need have we of another teacher? We have the Books and the Commentaries. What scroll does thy master bring?”
¹⁸And Elior said, “He brings no scroll, for He is the Scroll. The Word made flesh. Thou wilt not read Him; thou wilt meet Him.”
¹⁹And they mocked him. “Thou bringest riddles, not revelation. Go back to the caves from whence thou came.”
²⁰Yet a few among them were troubled, and a young woman followed him in silence for three days, and asked him questions by night.
²¹When he left Avar, she remained behind, yet her heart was awakened.
²²Elior then came to the land of Kezreth, the southern kingdom, strong in arms and proud in conquest.
²³There the city walls gleamed with metal, and warriors trained even in the courtyards of temples.
²⁴Among them Elior stood at the gates of the barracks and spoke:
²⁵“Men of Kezreth! Thou art mighty in war, but the might of the Lord is greater! Lay down thy pride, for the Prince of Peace approaches!”
²⁶“He shall not come with sword or banner, but with healing in His hands and truth on His tongue. He shall conquer not lands, but hearts.”
²⁷The soldiers jeered and said, “Let Him come then, and we shall test His strength!”
²⁸And their captains said, “No king would send his son unguarded among men. Thou speakest of fables.”
²⁹But one among them, an old centurion, listened long, and at night asked, “Will He forgive even us, who have shed much blood?”
³⁰And Elior answered, “He comes for such as thee, who know the weight of their deeds and yet seek peace.”
³¹So Elior went from town to town, from hill to hill, preaching the Word as he was commanded. His voice was not silenced, though it grew hoarse with use.
³²Some threw stones, and others brought bread. Some shouted curses, and others knelt for blessing.
³³In every place he left behind a question — a spark, small or great — and though many denied it, none could forget him.
³⁴The name of the Son was not known to them yet, but the promise stirred them. The Word was planted, and it would grow.
³⁵And Elior, wearied in body yet fierce in faith, prayed each night, saying:
³⁶“O Lord, keep me steady. Let me not stray from the path Thou hast set. Make my voice as thunder and my soul as flint, that I may not fail Thee.”
³⁷And the Lord was with him, though unseen, and his steps did not falter.
³⁸But the eyes of the jealous were upon him. Those who feared the coming of a greater power began to whisper and conspire.
³⁹The hour of his trial approached, though he did not yet know it. Yet he walked on, fearless and faithful.
