CHAPTER 4
¹And it came to pass in the days that followed, that the fame of Phara grew in the land, and his name was spoken in the streets and in the courts of princes.
²For his voice was heard in the valleys and in the mountains, in the cities and in the fields, and many turned their hearts unto the Lord.
³But the rulers and judges, and the scribes of the people, were sore displeased, for the hearts of the multitude were no longer wholly theirs.
⁴And they said one unto another, “If this man continue, our power shall be made of none effect. The people shall hearken unto him and despise our decrees.”
⁵“Come, let us seize him in secret, that we may rid ourselves of this trouble, and silence his tongue from troubling the peace of our dominion.”
⁶So they laid wait for him in the evening, when he was alone upon the hill, where he was wont to pray.
⁷And there came unto him armed men, and they compassed him about, and one spake, saying, “Art thou Phara, the preacher of strange things?”
⁸And he answered and said, “I am he. If ye seek me, here am I. But why come ye as to a thief, with staves and cords, when I have harmed no man?”
⁹Then they took him and bound him with cords, and they led him by night to the judgment house, that none might see and raise their voice against it.
¹⁰And there sat the high judges, with the rulers of the city, and they brought accusation against him, saying, “This man blasphemeth, and stirreth up sedition, and maketh himself a prophet.”
¹¹But Phara stood silent, and answered them not, for his heart was fixed upon the Lord.
¹²And they smote him on the cheek, and said, “Prophesy unto us now, thou preacher of visions. Where is thy God, that He might save thee?”
¹³And he lifted up his eyes and said, “The Lord beholdeth from Heaven, and His judgments shall not tarry. Ye shall see His Son, and ye shall weep.”
¹⁴Then were they cut to the heart, and their wrath was kindled as fire. And they cried with one voice, “Let him be put to death!”
¹⁵And they led him forth from the judgment hall, and cast him into a dark place until the morning.
¹⁶And in the morning they brought him unto the place of execution, a barren hill without the city, and there was a great tree that stood alone.
¹⁷And as they prepared the cords, Phara lifted his voice and said, “O Lord God of Hosts, into Thy hands I commend my spirit. I have done Thy bidding, and now I go unto Thee.”
¹⁸“Thou art just, O Lord, and Thy Word endureth for ever. Though they slay me, yet shall Thy truth live on, and Thy Son shall come as Thou hast spoken.”
¹⁹Then they placed the noose about his neck, and he looked up unto Heaven and smiled.
²⁰And one of the guards, beholding his face, was troubled, for it shone as the morning star, and he turned his face away.
²¹But the chief among them gave the signal, and they hanged him upon the tree, and he died the death, and gave up the ghost.
²²And there was silence upon the hill, and the wind passed over it, and the sky grew heavy.
²³And those who were gathered beheld, and some smote upon their breasts, saying, “Surely this was a holy man. Woe unto us, for we have slain a just one.”
²⁴And it was told in every place that Phara the prophet had been slain, and there arose great lamentation among those who had believed.
²⁵And they took down his body by night, and buried it in a cave near unto the river, where he had once preached the word of the Lord.
²⁶And they set a stone above the place, and upon it they graved these words: “Here lieth Phara, servant of the Most High. He walked in faith, and feared not death.”
²⁷And the number of those that believed in his word grew daily, for they remembered all that he had spoken concerning the Son of God, who should come to save the world from chaos.
²⁸And thus ended the days of Phara, prophet of the Lord, whose blood crieth unto Heaven and whose soul resteth in peace.
²⁹Blessed be the name of the Lord, who raiseth up prophets in every generation, and crowneth them with glory in the world to come.
