CHAPTER 3
¹And Phara went out from his dwelling, clothed in sackcloth, and his staff was in his hand, and his brow was set steadfastly toward the way of the Lord.
²And he came first unto the Kingdom of the North, wherein the snow falleth even in the time of harvest, and he entered into the great city thereof, whose gates were of iron and its walls of stone.
³And he cried with a loud voice in the marketplaces, saying, “Give ear, O ye people, and incline thy hearts unto the word of the Lord!”
⁴“For thus saith the Most High: ‘My Son cometh, and with Him shall be salvation for the world, and peace for them that believe. He shall break the chains of chaos, and the fury of evil shall be stilled beneath His feet.’”
⁵“Turn ye from thy vanities and thy transgressions, and seek the face of the Lord while He yet calleth unto thee.”
⁶And some were astonished at his speech and said one to another, “What meaneth this man, and whence cometh he with such words?”
⁷And others mocked, saying, “He is mad; he speaketh visions and vapours of the air. Let him return unto his own land.”
⁸But there were also among them men and women of contrite hearts, who hearkened unto his word, and wept, and repented of their deeds.
⁹And Phara tarried there many days, and entered into the temples and the places of assembly, and there he taught concerning the Son of the Most High.
¹⁰And he said, “The days are full of travail, and Ivalice groaneth beneath the weight of the unrighteous. But He that shall come shall lighten the burden and cleanse the land.”
¹¹And again he lifted his voice, saying, “Behold, the Son of God shall walk among men, and His mercy shall be as rain upon the thirsty field. His power shall astonish the nations, and none shall stand against Him.”
¹²And he departed thence and came unto the Kingdom of the West, where the rivers are wide and the sun setteth late, and the people therein were mighty in craft and cunning.
¹³And he entered into the city of merchants, where gold is exchanged as water, and pride aboundeth among the rich.
¹⁴There he stood in the midst of their gatherings, and he cried aloud, saying, “O ye who trust in thy riches, shall silver deliver thee in the day of the Lord’s appearing?”
¹⁵“Thy treasures shall rot, and thy fine raiment shall be eaten with worms. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.”
¹⁶“Seek not thy gain in the dust of Ivalice, but in the knowledge of the Son of God, who shall come with healing in His wings and with judgment in His voice.”
¹⁷And the merchants murmured against him, saying, “This man troubleth the peace, and soweth fear in the hearts of the people.”
¹⁸But others wondered at his words, and some followed him from place to place, saying, “Surely the Spirit of the Lord is upon this man, for his speech pierceth the heart.”
¹⁹And Phara wept for the hardness of their hearts, and prayed for them day and night, that their eyes might be opened and their souls spared in the hour of trial.
²⁰Then went he into the Kingdom of the East, where the fields are green and the hills are as gold in the morning.
²¹And he journeyed unto the mountain towns, and there spake unto shepherds and tillers of the soil, saying, “Blessed are ye, for ye are near unto Ivalice, and thy hands have not grown proud.”
²²“The Lord looketh with favour upon the lowly, and His Son shall be born not in palaces, but among such as these.”
²³And the people received him gladly, and made room for him in their homes, and brought him bread and water, and heard him gladly.
²⁴And he taught them saying, “He that shall come shall feed the hungry with truth, and give drink to the soul that thirsteth after righteousness.”
²⁵“He shall speak peace to the nations, and smite the mouth of the liar. His word shall not falter, and the gates of the grave shall not prevail against Him.”
²⁶And in all these places went Phara, walking barefoot and unshorn, bearing with him only the word of the Lord.
²⁷And wherever he entered, there went out from him a fragrance of holiness, and men were stirred in their spirits and made to wonder at the hope that was within him.
²⁸And there rose up in every city a remnant who believed the words which he spake, and gathered themselves in secret places to pray and to await the appearing of the Son of God.
²⁹But the rulers of those kingdoms, seeing that many hearkened unto Phara and turned from their former ways, were filled with envy and wrath.
³⁰And they said among themselves, “This man troubleth our dominion, and his words are as a sword that cleaveth the hearts of the people.”
³¹“Let us take counsel together, lest his voice rise up like fire and consume the confidence of our courts.”
³²And thus was the seed of martyrdom sown, for the Word had gone forth in strength, and the kingdoms had been warned.
³³And Phara, knowing not the hour of his deliverance, continued steadfast in all things, loving not his life unto the death, but trusting wholly in the promise of the Lord.
³⁴And the days grew dark about him, yet the light of the word burned within him as a lantern set upon a hill.
