CHAPTER 1
¹And it came to pass, in the years after the forming of the world, that the Most High looked upon the works of His hands, and beheld that they were good.
²For the land of Ivalice had blossomed as a garden in the spring, and the children of men did walk therein in peace, and their works did prosper.
³And lo, the sons of men tilled the soil with strength, and the fruit thereof was bountiful; and their herds did wax fat upon the hills.
⁴The rivers gave their waters freely, and the trees bowed down with sweetness; and the sun did shine gentle upon them, and the rain came not in wrath, but in season.
⁵The cities of the plains were filled with merriment, and the watchmen cried not in the night, for there was no fear.
⁶Craftsmen laid their hands upon stone and upon bronze, and shaped wonders; scribes set to parchment the tongues of angels and men, and the wisdom of old was not forgotten.
⁷Then the Lord of Heaven, whose name is unknowable, and whose dwelling is in light unapproachable, spake unto the host that serve Him, saying:
⁸“Behold, I have looked upon the sons of men, and they have done good in My sight. Their hands are clean, and their hearts are not lifted up unto vanity.”
⁹“Their kings rule justly, and turn not aside unto idols; they render unto their people what is meet, and their tongues are not swift to deceive.”
¹⁰“Therefore shall I bring them before Me, even the rulers of the three tribes, that I may reward their houses for the good that is in them.”
¹¹And there were in that day three great tribes among the sons of men, and each had a king set over them.
¹²The first was the tribe of Delmarians, whose city was built upon the hills of the north, and whose banners were blue and silver.
¹³And their king was Loras, son of Halmar, a man full of understanding, learned in the ways of ancient lore, and given to counsel and letters.
¹⁴The second was the tribe of Kezrethites, who dwelt in the vastness of the plains, where the wind goeth freely; and their king was named Baltrain, son of Oric.
¹⁵He was mighty in stature, and his hand clave to the sword, yet he was no oppressor; his enemies feared him, and his people did not.
¹⁶The third was the tribe of Avarites, who dwelt by the coast and in the mountains, and they were a people quiet and wise.
¹⁷And their king was Cadra, son of Methor, a man of peace, who judged rightly between man and man, and walked humbly with his God.
¹⁸And the Lord sent forth His word, and it moved as flame upon the wind, and entered into the dreams of the kings, each in the same night.
¹⁹And in their dreams they saw the Heavens open, and they beheld a mountain of crystal, and upon the mountain stood One whose countenance no man could behold.
²⁰And a voice like many waters cried unto them, saying: “Come ye up, O sons of kings; for the time is at hand, and thy service hath been received with favor.”
²¹“Come, that ye may speak with the Lord thy God, and hear that which hath been reserved from the foundation of the world.”
²²And the kings awoke, and great fear was upon them, for the dreams were as fire in their bones, and they knew that it was no vain imagining.
²³So each made ready his chariot, and took with him no sword, nor spear, nor guard; for the fear of God was upon them, and they went as men summoned before the throne.
²⁴And Ivalice trembled as they departed, each from his kingdom, for the breath of the Most High was upon the way, and the winds did hush at His presence.
²⁵And when they came to the appointed place — which is hidden and known only to God — they found not a temple made by hands, nor a mountain wrought of stone.
²⁶But behold, there stood in the wilderness a plain of glass, clearer than the sea, and above it hung a sky without sun, yet full of glory.
²⁷And in the midst of the plain there rose a tree, great and terrible, whose roots were hidden and whose crown reached unto the heights, and upon every branch was a flame that burned and was not consumed.
²⁸And from the tree came a voice, and it was the voice of God, saying:
²⁹“Loras, son of Halmar; Baltrain, son of Oric; Cadra, son of Methor: I have seen thy ways, and they are good before Me.”
³⁰“I have counted the tears of thy people, and thou hast wiped them; I have heard their cries, and thou hast answered.”
³¹“Thy justice is as a river that overfloweth not its banks; thy mercy is as the dew upon the lilies.”
³²“Therefore have I called thee to Myself, that I may give unto thee a gift, and establish with thee a covenant that shall not be broken.”
³³And the kings fell upon their faces, and cried out, saying, “We are but dust and ashes before Thee, O Lord. How shall we receive Thy gift?”
³⁴But the voice answered them, saying: “Fear not, for the gift is not for thee alone, but for those who shall come after thee, and for the world that shall be.”
³⁵“Stand now, ye sons of kings, and prepare thy hearts, for I shall show thee a mystery and a choosing.”
³⁶“And thy names shall be remembered in the books of Heaven, and thy seed shall be numbered among the stars.”
³⁷Then the kings rose up, their faces pale as the dawn, and they were silent, for the glory of the Lord had encompassed them round about.
³⁸And a great stillness fell upon the plain, and even the breath of Ivalice seemed held in waiting.
³⁹For the Lord was about to speak again.
