CHAPTER 2
¹And the voice of the Lord spake once more, and it was as thunder that breaketh the cedars, and as the breath of a harp upon still waters.
²And He said: “Behold, I have weighed the hearts of men and of kings; I have measured the intentions thereof as in a balance, and ye three have not been found wanting.”
³“Thy hands have labored in justice; thy thoughts have not turned swiftly unto deceit, nor have thy lips spoken guile in the gate.”
⁴“I am the Lord thy God, who brought forth the world from the Void, who spread out the firmament as a scroll, and sealed the winds within their storehouses.”
⁵“Before the mountains were born, or ever the rivers ran in their beds, I was, and I am, and I shall be forevermore.”
⁶“Now therefore hear the words of My mouth, O Kings of Ivalice, and incline thy ears unto wisdom.”
⁷And as the Lord spake, there appeared before the kings three vessels, wrought of substance not known to any smith, shining with the light of stars, yet bearing no reflection.
⁸The first was of a hue deep and fathomless, like unto midnight upon the sea, and its rim was graven with signs ancient and hidden. And the Lord said: “This is the Chalice of Knowledge.”
⁹The second shone red as fire tempered with gold, and its surface moved as though living flame dwelt within. And the Lord said: “This is the Chalice of Power.”
¹⁰The third was plain, neither bright nor dull, and yet all who beheld it felt within their breasts a stirring of awe and stillness. And the Lord said: “This is the Chalice of Wisdom.”
¹¹“One and one only shall each of thou take; for no man may drink of more than one, lest his soul be torn asunder and perish utterly.”
¹²“For though they are gifts of My bounty, yet are they mighty and not without trial; each bringeth forth fruit according to its kind, but the root thereof is hidden, and the end is not yet made known.”
¹³“Let each man look not to his neighbor, but into the depths of his own heart, and choose that which is given him to bear.”
¹⁴Then there was silence upon the plain, and the tree in the midst bowed low its branches, and the flames thereon ceased not from their burning.
¹⁵And the three kings stood before the chalices, and they trembled, for the spirit of God was heavy upon them.
¹⁶The three kings went out and meditated on what the Lord had offered them.
