CHAPTER 3
¹And on the sixth day, the Lord looked upon the world He had formed — the Heavens above, the Hells below, and Ivalice between — and He said, “Let Us now make those who shall walk this world and hold dominion beneath the sun.”
²Not from whim did He create them, nor for His amusement, but for companionship, for stewardship, and for the fulfillment of His will.
³And He took of the dust of Ivalice, and of the breath of Heaven, and of the spark that dances between the living and the eternal, and He shaped them into man and into woman — not as one before the other, but as both at once.
⁴For the Lord made them side by side, each a reflection of the other, each in His image. He gave the man his strength and vision, and the woman her wisdom and fire, and to both He gave voice, memory, longing, and freedom.
⁵And He made them in sets of two: eleven men and eleven women for each of the three kingdoms He had chosen to rise upon Ivalice.
⁶The first kingdom He named Avar, in the east, where the green hills met the sea. The second He named Delmar, in the west, where rivers crossed broad fields. The third He named Kezreth, in the south, where the stone peaks pierced the clouds.
⁷In Avar, He set the first twenty-two of His people, and He gave them the gift of harmony, that they might labor together and build strong households.
⁸In Delmar, He set the second twenty-two, and to them He gave the gift of delight in craft, that they might shape wood and stone and cloth and metal with love.
⁹In Kezreth, He set the third twenty-two, and He gave them a hunger for wisdom and law, that they might order their days and govern with discernment.
¹⁰These were the First People, and they were unlike the beasts, for the beasts knew not eternity, nor could they weigh good and evil in their hearts.
¹¹And the Lord taught the First People how to live upon Ivalice. He walked among them and gave them words for the things they saw and names for their children.
¹²He taught them to read the skies and the stars, to tell the hours by the sun, and the seasons by the flowering of the trees.
¹³He showed them how to draw water from the deep places, and how to shelter themselves from wind and rain.
¹⁴He placed within them the yearning for truth and the ache for beauty, and from these were born the songs and the stories, and from these would rise one day the temples and the scrolls.
¹⁵In the early days, the people did not build high walls, for they feared no enemy. They shared their food, their songs, and their labors.
¹⁶The men and women walked side by side in the fields, each sowing, each reaping. None ruled above the other, and none bowed except in reverence to the Lord.
¹⁷And the Lord appointed among each kingdom one to guide, not to command. These were the first kings, chosen not by blood nor might, but by wisdom and compassion.
¹⁸The King of Avar was named Talmanes, a man of clear speech and humble bearing. The queen of Delmar was Halien, a woman of cunning hands and joyful heart. The King of Kezreth was Bezaliel, a man of keen insight and fervent thought.
¹⁹And in the time of planting, the people called to the Lord with songs of praise, and in the time of harvest, they offered the first fruits of their labor.
²⁰The Lord walked the paths of Avar, laughed beside the rivers of Delmar, and rested in the shade of the mountains of Kezreth.
²¹He spoke with the people as a shepherd among his flock, and no veil stood between His voice and their ears.
²²The animals knew His step, and Ivalice gave way beneath His feet without resistance. When He passed, the flowers turned to face Him, and the winds held their breath.
²³And the people were not ignorant of His greatness, for they had seen His might and felt His presence, but they were not yet afraid, for they knew Him also as friend.
²⁴In the early days, the land bore more than was sown, and no child died in its mother's arms. The weather was gentle, and beasts did not stalk the settlements.
²⁵And the people told their children, “We walk not alone. The Lord of All walks with us, and we are the work of His hands.”
²⁶But as the days turned to years, and the people became many, the kingdoms grew in size and in mind.
²⁷They raised stones into homes and carved halls into the sides of cliffs. They tamed beasts and learned the way of flame and wheel.
²⁸The Lord looked upon them with joy, for they used the gifts He had given and did not yet forget the Giver.
²⁹And the three kingdoms flourished: Avar in music and unity, Delmar in craft and color, Kezreth in wisdom and judgment.
³⁰But in Kezreth, where the mountains touch the Heavens and the clouds gather long before the rain, the seed of ambition began to stir in one heart.
³¹For Bezaliel, the King of Kezreth, looked upon the works of his people and said, “We are mighty. There is no land beyond ours, no thought greater than our thought.”
³²And he looked upon the Lord — not in love, but in rivalry — and said in his heart, “If He made me in His image, then I am no less than He.”
³³Thus pride took root. And the Lord, who knows all the thoughts of man, saw what rose in Bezaliel’s soul.
³⁴But He did not act in haste, for He wished to give even the proud a chance to turn.
³⁵The kingdoms knew only the days of light, not yet the days of shadow. They feasted, they planted, they sang, and they danced.
³⁶And the Lord walked among them still, a shepherd with eyes that saw the coming storm.
