CHAPTER 4
¹In the high Kingdom of Kezreth, where clouds curled like smoke over the jagged peaks, Bezaliel sat upon a throne of blackened stone and looked down upon the valleys.
²His people flourished; their books were full of laws and lore, their cities climbed the cliffs in tiers, and their scholars whispered of stars beyond sight.
³And Bezaliel said in his heart, “I have raised a kingdom unmatched. No hand but mine has wrought these wonders. No mind but mine has ordered such perfection.”
⁴He looked upon the Lord, who still walked among the kingdoms, and though his lips sang praise, his spirit brewed rebellion.
⁵“What is the Lord,” he said to his closest council, “but the One who gave us the start? But we — we are those who build. We are those who shape.”
⁶His council murmured uneasily, but none dared rebuke him, for his words came wrapped in charm and cloaked in reason.
⁷In time, Bezaliel sent messengers to Avar and Delmar, proclaiming: “The age of walking beneath has passed. We are not children in need of a shepherd. We are gods in our own right.”
⁸The people of Avar wept and tore their garments. The people of Delmar held silence and sorrow. But in Kezreth, Bezaliel’s followers raised their voices in thunderous acclaim.
⁹Then Bezaliel ascended the summit of Mount Zareth, which pierced the Heavens like a sword, and there he built an altar of ice and fire.
¹⁰And he cried out into the firmament, “If Thou be God, and I be but a man, let it be shown. But if I am Thy equal, then let all the kingdoms bow to me, for my throne is not of clay.”
¹¹At once, the sky darkened, and clouds gathered from the ends of Ivalice. Thunder roared as if the mountains themselves were groaning.
¹²The Lord descended upon Mount Zareth in brightness that scorched the ice and made the stones bleed steam.
¹³And the people of the three kingdoms trembled, and many fell to their knees, for the voice of the Lord was as many waters and many winds.
¹⁴“Bezaliel,” said the Lord, “thou hast spoken folly before the ears of My people and sought to raise thyself above thy station.”
¹⁵“Thou think thyself My equal? Then I name thee Amphisbaena, the serpent with a head at both ends, ever twisting upon itself and finding no rest.”
¹⁶“Thou speak from both sides, proclaiming honor while plotting rebellion. Thou art a mouth that devours and a mouth that deceives.”
¹⁷And Bezaliel laughed, though fear clung to his bones. “Thou gavest me reason. Thou gavest me voice. I have done only what Thou makest me able to do.”
¹⁸“Yes,” said the Lord. “And thou wert made free, not perfect. Thou chose pride, when thou couldst have chosen peace.”
¹⁹And with a word, the Lord struck the altar of ice and fire, and it shattered into a thousand shards, and the mountain groaned and split beneath it.
²⁰Ivalice opened wide, and a chasm of blackness yawned beneath Bezaliel’s feet.
²¹“Thou wilt not rule among the living,” said the Lord. “But thou wilt not die, for I made thee eternal.”
²²“Thou wilt go to the place I prepared for those who turn from Me — to the far depths, where warmth is unknown and light does not pass.”
²³And He cast Bezaliel down, and he fell screaming into the cold void of Hell, spiraling beyond reach of sun or moon.
²⁴The people of Kezreth fled the mount in terror, and many repented in dust and ashes.
²⁵And from that day, Bezaliel was known no more in the land of the living, but only as Amphisbaena — the First Fallen, the King of Hell.
²⁶The mountain that had touched the Heavens was sealed with frost, and none dared ascend it again.
²⁷And the Lord said to the people, “I do not delight in destruction. But I will not abide false gods, nor share My glory with clay.”
²⁸“Let this be known through all generations: that wisdom apart from fear of the Lord leads only to ruin.”
²⁹And the people of the three kingdoms set this account in song and stone, that it not be forgotten.
³⁰In Delmar, they carved the tale in crystal, and lit it by fire. In Avar, they sang it each winter, when the days were darkest. In Kezreth, they left the peak untouched, a silent witness.
³¹And the Lord withdrew from the summit and returned to His seat of rule among the people, grieved but unshaken.
³²Though Bezaliel had fallen, the Lord’s hand was not shortened, nor His will undone.
³³And He said, “I will shepherd those who seek Me, and I will guard the path of the humble. Let none say again, ‘I am as He,’ lest they too fall into the depths.”
