CHAPTER 2
¹And the Lord, Most High and Eternal, spake within Himself, not in haste, nor in wrath, but with the fullness of long patience.
²For He is a God of mercy, yet also of truth; of longsuffering, yet also of justice; and He changeth not.
³And He said, “I have walked among them. I have given to them My light, My law, and My love. I have spoken by kings and by prophets. I have warned by fire and by flood. I have healed their sick, fed their hungry, and stayed the hand of destruction.”
⁴“I have not turned away Mine eyes from their affliction, nor closed Mine ears to their cries. Yet they have cast Me from their midst, as one unclean. They have turned their faces from Me and have said, ‘We are gods unto ourselves.’”
⁵“Behold,” saith the Lord, “they build towers to reach the Heavens, yet their hearts are far from the heights. They uncover the mysteries of the stars, yet they forget the One who made them. They have turned My gifts into tools of pride.”
⁶“The cup of knowledge hath become a scepter of scorn. The cup of power hath birthed dominion and cruelty. The cup of wisdom — they drink not, though it is ever offered anew.”
⁷Then the Lord stood at the threshold of all things, and from the deep place of His holy thought issued the counsel that would shape the ages.
⁸“Shall I abide among a people who will not abide with Me?” saith the Lord. “Shall I dwell upon Ivalice, and be mocked? Shall I walk in their cities, and be cursed in their streets?”
⁹“I will withdraw,” saith the Lord. “I will return unto My holy place, and dwell above the veil, hidden from the eyes of the proud, and veiled from the nations.”
¹⁰“Not in anger do I depart,” saith the Lord, “nor in vengeance. For Mine anger is but for a moment, and My mercy endureth forever. Yet the season of nearness hath ended, and the age of seeking shall now begin.”
¹¹“Let Ivalice remember Me, if it will. Let man call upon Me, if he so desires. But I shall not speak from the mountain, nor write with My finger in the stone. I shall not walk in the garden in the cool of the day.”
¹²“I shall rise above the clouds, and be as the sun behind the storm. I shall see, and not be seen. I shall hear, and not be heard. And yet I shall never cease to love.”
¹³And the Lord called forth His holy ones, the hosts of Heaven, the morning stars that knew Him from the first breath of light.
¹⁴And He spake unto them, saying, “Prepare the gates of My habitation. Ready the court of the Most High. For I return now to the place of My dwelling, and leave the sons of man unto their paths.”
¹⁵And the angels bowed their faces and obeyed.
¹⁶Then did the Lord stretch forth His hand, not to strike, but to seal. And He sealed the veil between Heaven and Ivalice, that none should pass save whom He calleth, and none should behold save whom He revealeth.
¹⁷And He spake once more, and His voice was as a wind upon the deep, saying: “Let them seek Me with their whole heart, and they shall find Me. Let them cry in the night, and I shall incline Mine ear. Let them hunger for righteousness, and I shall feed them still.”
¹⁸“But Mine hand shall no longer be upon Ivalice, as it was in the days of old. Let the nations now walk by faith, not by sight. Let them choose the path, and see where it leadeth.”
¹⁹And with that decree, solemn and immutable, the Lord God Most High prepared to rise from among His creation, and to ascend beyond the seeing of man.
²⁰And Heaven stirred in solemn silence, and Ivalice knew not what would come.
