CHAPTER 1
¹And it came to pass, after many generations, that the Lord God beheld Ivalice once more with eyes full of remembrance.
²For He that sitteth above the circle of the firmament, who stretcheth out the Heavens as a curtain and layeth the foundations of the deep, turned His gaze downward unto the world that He had made.
³And lo, He considered the work of His hands, and the children of men that dwelt thereon.
⁴The rivers still flowed, and the mountains stood unmoved; the stars kept their courses, and the beasts their instincts. But in the heart of man was a wilderness of confusion, and in his soul, a war unceasing.
⁵The Lord spake not, but He pondered. For He is a God not only of speech, but of silence, and His meditations are deeper than the seas, and longer than the years of men.
⁶And He remembered the dawn of all things, when the world was yet young and green, and the first light touched the hills. He remembered the songs of the morning stars and the dance of the winds, and the joy with which He formed man from the dust.
⁷“Have I not planted thee in good soil?” saith the Lord. “Have I not watered thee with blessings, and hedged thee about with commandments? What more could I have done unto thee, O man, that I did not do?”
⁸He saw the three kings whom He had once anointed, and the nations that rose from their loins. He beheld their legacies — mighty cities, great towers, halls of study, and thrones of splendor.
⁹But He also beheld the blood upon the stones, and the lies inscribed on tablets of law. He saw the proud who trampled the meek, and the wise who mocked the just. He saw the cup of power passed hand to hand in greed, the cup of knowledge wielded as a blade, and the cup of wisdom, poured into the dust.
¹⁰And He said in His heart, “The gift is not at fault, but the vessel that beareth it. The fountain is pure, but the cistern is broken.”
¹¹Then the Lord walked among the memories of His creation, for the Spirit of the Lord goeth where it will. He passed through the fields once tended in peace, now ravaged by war; He passed by the children born into hatred, and the old who died in sorrow.
¹²And He lingered longest in the places where He had once walked with men — beside the springs, beneath the fig trees, in the quiet places of prayer and promise.
¹³But where once He had been met with thanksgiving, now the altars were bare, and the prayers were few.
¹⁴And the Lord was grieved unto the depths of His mystery, for He loved the world, though the world knew Him not.
¹⁵“I am not wearied,” saith the Lord, “for I am eternal. Yet My heart is heavy with the burden of their ruin. They have not forgotten Me, but they have forsaken Me.”
¹⁶Then He gathered all things into His thought, as a shepherd gathereth the flock into the fold. He weighed every act, every word, every turning of every soul, from the least unto the greatest.
¹⁷And He beheld that the root of rebellion had grown deep, and that Ivalice could no longer bear the weight of His presence without trembling.
¹⁸“Shall I dwell forever among a people who seek not My face?” saith the Lord. “Shall I abide where I am blasphemed, and yet hold back My wrath forever?”
¹⁹And in the stillness of eternity, the Lord prepared His answer.
