CHAPTER 3
¹And the Lord beheld the children of men, and He looked down from the heights of the Heavens upon the lands of Ivalice.
²And Ivalice was filled with noise and tumult; the cries of the afflicted reached unto the skies, and the groanings of the oppressed rose like smoke from the altars of blood.
³And the Lord said, “What is this that My people have wrought with the gifts of My right hand?”
⁴“Lo, I gave unto them knowledge, that they might understand the mysteries of the world, and walk in the ways of discernment.”
⁵“I gave unto them power, that they might defend the innocent and uphold the cause of righteousness.”
⁶“I gave unto them wisdom, that they might guide the nations and lead them as a shepherd leadeth his flock.”
⁷“But now they are become as wolves among the lambs, and every hand is raised in violence, and every tongue speaketh deceit.”
⁸“Their knowledge is puffed up with vanity; they search the stars, but they know not their own hearts.”
⁹“Their power is spent in tyranny and conquest; they lift up their banners, but they trample justice underfoot.”
¹⁰“Their wisdom is bartered for applause; they sit in the gates and speak smooth words, but they heed not the cries of the poor.”
¹¹And the Lord turned His face from them, and darkness covered the hearts of the wise, and the strong, and the learned.
¹²For the light of the chalices grew dim, and the glory that once went before them like a pillar of fire faded as the mist at dawn.
¹³And the Lord said, “Shall I stretch forth Mine arm in wrath? Shall I visit them with plague, and famine, and sword?”
¹⁴“Shall I break them as the potter breaketh a vessel? Shall I call back the breath I have given, and let the dust return to the dust?”
¹⁵But the Lord is merciful and long-suffering, and His justice is tempered with patience.
¹⁶For He remembered the covenant He had made with the kings upon the mountain, and He remembered the promise He had sworn by His own name.
¹⁷And He said, “Not yet shall I strike, neither shall I make an end of them.”
¹⁸“For I have appointed a time, and a Day of Judgment shall come, when the measure of their deeds shall be full.”
¹⁹“I have set a seal upon My judgment, and none may open it before its hour.”
²⁰“Until then, I shall not punish, though I shall not bless; I shall not destroy, though I shall not plaudit the deeds of My people.”
²¹“Let the world go its way, and let men choose their own steps. He who walks in light shall find it; but he who loves darkness shall have his fill.”
²²And the Lord withdrew into His sanctuary, and the voice of prophecy was stilled in the land.
²³And the dreams of the holy were silenced, and the visions of the just ceased.
²⁴And a famine came upon the hearts of men — not of bread, nor of water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.
²⁵Yet even in the silence, the Lord watched. His eyes searched Ivalice, and none were hidden from His gaze.
²⁶And He marked those who mourned for righteousness, and He counted the tears of the innocent.
²⁷And He said in His heart, “Though many forget Me, I shall not forget them. Though the world is defiled, I shall keep a remnant for Myself.”
²⁸And in the secret places of Ivalice, in caves and wildernesses and in the hearts of the lowly, the light flickered still.
²⁹And the Lord waited.
³⁰And it was evening, and it was morning — the second day of sorrow.
