CHAPTER 4
¹And the Lord sat upon the circle of the Heavens, and He looked upon Ivalice, and the sorrow of His heart was great.
²And the Lord said, “O My people, what have ye done? What have ye made of the gifts which I gave unto thy fathers?”
³“I poured out knowledge as water, and ye drank, and became drunk with pride. I gave power as fire, and ye seized it to consume thy brethren. I gave wisdom as the dew of the morning, and ye cast it away as one casteth dust from his feet.”
⁴“Where now is the gentleness of the wise? Where is the justice of the strong? Where is the reverence of the learned?”
⁵“I see cities built upon the backs of slaves, and temples raised in My name wherein I am not known. I hear the voices of flatterers in the courts of kings, and the cries of the poor in the streets, but no one heedeth them.”
⁶“The scribe hath become a mocker; the soldier, a tyrant; the sage, a liar. Even the priest seeketh gain and not grace.”
⁷“Was it for this I formed thee from the dust? Was it for this I breathed into thy nostrils the breath of life?”
⁸“When thou wast yet a child, I walked with thee in the cool of the day. I clothed thee with righteousness, and crowned thee with mercy. I called thee My delight.”
⁹“But thou art turned away, and thy heart is become a stone. Ye have fashioned gods from thy own hands and worshipped them. Ye have lifted up thy souls unto vanity.”
¹⁰And the Lord wept, for His compassion is great.
¹¹And He said, “O that thou hadst hearkened unto My voice! Then peace should have been as a river unto thee, and righteousness as the waves of the sea.”
¹²“But now thou art become a desolation in Mine eyes, a vineyard overgrown with thorns, a well whose waters are bitter.”
¹³“Yet even now My hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither is My ear heavy, that it cannot hear.”
¹⁴“Return unto Me, O children of men. Though thy sin be as scarlet, I will make it white as snow. Though thou hast fallen far, I will raise thee up.”
¹⁵“But ye would not. Ye have hardened thy necks, and thy eyes are full of blood. Therefore shall ye go thy own way until the time appointed.”
¹⁶And the Lord was silent, and the Heavens grew still. Ivalice groaned beneath the weight of transgression, and the stars withheld their song.
¹⁷Yet in the midst of sorrow, the Lord remembered mercy. He spoke no more, but He remembered.
¹⁸And He waited. Thus was the third day of sorrow.
